The NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme, put in place by the Australian government to support the over four million Australians living with a disability. The scheme provides funding so that people can access supports and services, including assistance at home, assistive technology and aids, disability products and more.

The objectives of the NDIS are to help people living with a disability to improve their skills and independence. All participants are required to set goals in collaboration with a support worker so they can work towards achieving these. If you think you are eligible for the NDIS, find out more about plans and support.

What is the Eligibility Criteria for the NDIS?

There are certain eligibility criteria that you must meet to access the NDIS. These include:

  • Aged between 7 and 65. If you fall outside of this age bracket, you may be eligible for funding through a different program.
  • Australian resident. You must be a citizen or have a Permanent or Special Category Visa to be eligible.
  • Require support from a person, special equipment or other support due to a permanent and significant disability.

How do I request access?

To apply for the NDIS, you will need to provide a completed Access Request Form. These can be found on the NDIS website. You will also need to provide some additional information about your disability and the need for assistance. You may want to ask a family member, friend, carer or healthcare professional to assist you with this process.

What does an NDIS plan involve?

Once you are approved for access to NDIS funding, you will be required to put together a plan. The plan will include the goals, activities and tasks that you want to pursue. Examples of these could include learning a new skill, getting a job, or getting involved in the community. Big goals can be broken down into manageable steps. In your planning meeting, you will discuss what kind of support you need to reach your objectives.

When you have an approved NDIS plan, you can begin to choose the supports and services you want to utilise to pursue your goals.
